A different look at pain

Image courtesy of Research at CarolinaDon’t you wish sometimes that you’d never feel any pain for the rest of your life? Someone out there actually never feels any physical pain and her name is Ashlyn Blocker from Patterson, Georgia. She is 7 years old, born with a very rare nerve disorder. You feel pain because the affected part of your body sends a signal, a sensation to your brain. But with Ashlyn, these sensations do not get delivered.

Now you might think that this must be great, never feeling any pain, but she wishes the opposite. She pokes and hurt her eyes as a child and she doesn’t feel anything till her parents notice. She chewed on her plastic toys and several times losing teeth but she noticed only after seeing blood. Her life has become a series of injuries after injuries. Her parents must always look for cuts on her body. If she walks barefoot and steps on a nail, she would only notice after she sees the blood on the floor. She can not feel extreme hot or extreme cold, therefore her body does not react by sweating to cool its temperature when that’s needed. She sips a boiling hot drink, buring her lips without even noticing. What becomes a nightmare for her parents is the question, what if she is having any illness inside her body, how would they be alerted?!

Pain is the warning that your body sends to your brain that something is wrong, so it would react instantly. Yes, we should all be thankful for pain!

It turns out that these columns will not be syndicated to the Toronto Star or New York Times anytime soon, so please forgive my seemingly random ideas or any breaking of the academic rules of writing that I usually try to adhere to. The main theme of my blog is randomness and lack of order, enjoy!
